For our discussion this week, we were asked to
evaluate the 5 sectors of the early childhood field and the major
contributors. Head Start, Child Care,
Health and Well-Being, Public Early Childhood Education, and Research/Academia. The two contributors I selected were Dr.
Edward Zigler and Marian Wright Edelman.
Both have contributed greatly to the early childhood field.
If we don't stand up for children, then we don't stand for much.”
“It is the responsibility of every adult... to make sure that children
hear what we have learned from the lessons of life and to hear over and over
that we love them and that they are not alone.”
I have long believed that the development of a child does not begin the
day he is born - or at age three - but much earlier, during the formative years
of his parents. -Edward Zigler, Ph.D.
It is important to help children learn as much as possible about
parenting to help prevent social problems like premature child bearing, and
child neglect and abuse. Now that we know more about brain development in the
very young, it is critical that we teach our future parents the important role
that parents can play in stimulating and nurturing their children, and in
preparing them to reach their full potential in school and in later life. -Edward Zigler, Ph.D.
