Words of Inspiration and Motivation

For our discussion this week, we were asked to evaluate the 5 sectors of the early childhood field and the major contributors.  Head Start, Child Care, Health and Well-Being, Public Early Childhood Education, and Research/Academia.  The two contributors I selected were Dr. Edward Zigler and Marian Wright Edelman.  Both have contributed greatly to the early childhood field.

If we don't stand up for children, then we don't stand for much.”

“It is the responsibility of every adult... to make sure that children hear what we have learned from the lessons of life and to hear over and over that we love them and that they are not alone.”

I have long believed that the development of a child does not begin the day he is born - or at age three - but much earlier, during the formative years of his parents. -Edward Zigler, Ph.D.

It is important to help children learn as much as possible about parenting to help prevent social problems like premature child bearing, and child neglect and abuse. Now that we know more about brain development in the very young, it is critical that we teach our future parents the important role that parents can play in stimulating and nurturing their children, and in preparing them to reach their full potential in school and in later life. -Edward Zigler, Ph.D.

“All great achievements require time.”

You become what you believe. –Oprah Winfrey

The heart of human excellence often begins to beat when you discover a pursuit that absorbs you, frees you, challenges you, and gives you a sense of meaning, joy and passion.

Personal Childhood Web

My childhood web shows the people that loved and supported me as a child.

My mother is the sweetest person I know.  She has been my support system my entire life. I remember the first time I sang in front of people that weren't family. I was so nervous. My mother told me to sing to her and everything would be fine.  Anytime I perform, if my mother is there I can always find her and I am instantly calmed. I LOVE my Mama! I would not be the woman I am today if it weren't for her.

My father and I have become really good friends. We are a lot alike and that hasn't always been good.
When I was a child I used to think my father was super tough. He wanted all of his children to do well and so he pushed us hard.  I used to call him the homework monster because we never had a day off from school work. As I progressed into adulthood, I began to really appreciate my dad.  I am excited about the relationship we have and I married a man just like him.

I loved spending time with my grandmothers.  They were both diva's and had no problems speaking their minds.  My grandma Rubye and I spent a lot of time together when I was a child.  I never had any doubt that she loved me because she told it to me every time I saw her.  She used to tell me stories of her childhood and we would laugh until we cried.  She passed away in 2009 and I miss her to this day.  My other grandmother liked for us to call her granny.  Granny loves her hats!  She has hats to go with every outfit.  I remember playing dress up in her clothes and putting on concerts in front of her mirror.  My granny and I have a special relationship.  She doesn't sugar coat anything and I always know when I talk to her about something, she will give it to me straight.

My aunt Polly is like a second mother to me.  She waited to have children and for a long time I had her all to myself.  My aunt is one of my biggest supporters.  When I was a child I spent most of my weekends with her.  The first time I ever got my face painted I was with my aunt.  She had taken me to a carnival and I was so excited to go.  I still remember that day like it was yesterday.  I am very lucky to have her as my aunt.

Children's Book

This is one of my favorite books. I probably read it to my class 10x's a week. Right before nap time we all lay down together to read a book. We say goodnight to each person in the class and whatever is around at the time. Yesterday when I pulled the book out two of the children looked at me and said "nite, nite". It was such a precious moment.
