Words of Inspiration and Motivation

For our discussion this week, we were asked to evaluate the 5 sectors of the early childhood field and the major contributors.  Head Start, Child Care, Health and Well-Being, Public Early Childhood Education, and Research/Academia.  The two contributors I selected were Dr. Edward Zigler and Marian Wright Edelman.  Both have contributed greatly to the early childhood field.

If we don't stand up for children, then we don't stand for much.”

“It is the responsibility of every adult... to make sure that children hear what we have learned from the lessons of life and to hear over and over that we love them and that they are not alone.”

I have long believed that the development of a child does not begin the day he is born - or at age three - but much earlier, during the formative years of his parents. -Edward Zigler, Ph.D.

It is important to help children learn as much as possible about parenting to help prevent social problems like premature child bearing, and child neglect and abuse. Now that we know more about brain development in the very young, it is critical that we teach our future parents the important role that parents can play in stimulating and nurturing their children, and in preparing them to reach their full potential in school and in later life. -Edward Zigler, Ph.D.

“All great achievements require time.”

You become what you believe. –Oprah Winfrey

The heart of human excellence often begins to beat when you discover a pursuit that absorbs you, frees you, challenges you, and gives you a sense of meaning, joy and passion.

  1. Keli, I enjoyed reading the inspirational words of early childhood contributors posted on your blog. Especially thought provoking were the statements of Dr. Edward Zigler. The notion of preparing our children to be responsible parents has to potential to break the generational cycles of failure that we see so often in urban school districts. Thank you for sharing these message to contribute to the knowledge of others! -Susan

  2. Hi Kelly. I loved the quotes you shared. I agree with Susan. I especially loved the quote by Dr. Zigler. Their is a big potential to break the cycles of bad parenting by prepairing our children to be responsible parents. Children are reflections of their parents and if they have a good healthy development then there is a good chance that their children will too! As child care providers, we can look at parents to help us decipher issues of their children. Thank you for sharing!

  3. Keli, I liked the first quote you decide to use for Marian Wright Edelman. I think we have to stand up for our children and ensure them that we want them to succeed. In order for them to have a chance at life we need to push them and show them the way. As an up incoming educator I've learned the importance of showing children that you believe in them and you will stand behind them and be their to support them as much as it is needed.-Persephone
