The Association for Childhood
Education
The Association for Childhood
Education International or ACEI is a global community dedicated to promoting
the optimal education and development of children in a changing world. Serving
as a knowledge broker for innovative practices and an advocate for education
and children's rights, the Association's vibrant and active past has ensured
that children around the world are protected, supported, and educated in an
equitable fashion that allows them to reach their true potential (ACEI, 2012).
Currently, ACEI is advocating for child rights through the Love Me, Teach Me
campaign developed to raise awareness about child rights and the UN Convention
on the Rights of the Child. ACEI, believes each
child possesses a unique set of gifts and talents while also understanding the
key principles that join the world together through the common bonds of human
dignity and respect.
ACEI also believes that educational
experiences are enhanced by instructional strategies and learning environments
that offer the very best opportunities for children's learning within the
context of the nation, community, city, town or village in which children live
(ACEI, 2012).
ACEI's has a Country Liaison
program that encourages the development of a network of ACEI volunteer liaisons
from various nations around the world. The purpose of this network is to gather
information about childhood education practices and policies in various
nations, share this information with members and non-members, provide
information to support the development of association programs, and promote
international and intercultural understanding (ACEI, 2012). In addition, at
times, ACEI accepts applications for internships. Individuals wanting to invest
their skills and time into this organization should have a passion for
children’s rights throughout the world. Individuals should be able to accept
and respect other cultures while working with a diverse group of individuals for
a greater cause.
The International Step by Step Association
ISSA is a vibrant network that connects professionals and
non-profit organizations working in the field of early childhood development.
Established in the Netherlands in 1999, ISSA’s community today stretches across
the globe with its more than 50 members primarily located in Europe and Central
Asia. Building upon the Step by Step Program initiated by the Open Society
Foundations in 1994, ISSA aims to ensure equal access to quality care and
education for all young children from birth to 10 years old. This mission is
implemented through three main pillars of action: equal access for all
children; promoting high-quality and professionalism in early years services
and empowering parents and communities to be part of the children’s development
and learning.
ISSA is open to all organizations and individuals who want
to join our efforts to:
Nurture professionalism in the
education and care services from birth through primary school, building
capacities and using comprehensive resources.
Promote social justice and respect
for diversity in early years services and in society in general through
transformative trainings and inspiring resources.
Encourage and support the involvement
of families and communities in decision making processes about young children.
Build a strong network of
practitioners working with and for young Romani children and their families.
Advocate for inclusive Early Childhood systems and
critical issues related to access, equity and quality.
UNESCO
UNESCO strives to build networks among nations that enable
this kind of solidarity, by:
•
Mobilizing for education: so that every child, boy or
girl, has access to quality education as a fundamental human right and as a
prerequisite for human development.
•
Building intercultural understanding: through protection
of heritage and support for cultural diversity. UNESCO created the idea of
World Heritage to protect sites of outstanding universal value.
•
Pursuing scientific cooperation: such as early warning
systems for tsunamis or trans-boundary water management agreements, to
strengthen ties between nations and societies.
•
Protecting freedom of expression: an essential condition
for democracy, development and human dignity.
